Description

Serene 19th century parkland including 26 acres of walled gardens, ornamental lakes, children's trail, woodland walks and plant collections from Asia.

Tullynally has been the home of the Pakenhams, later Earls of Longford, for over 350 years.
The original 17th century fortified house was remodelled first as a comfortable Georgian mansion, then as a huge rambling gothic revival castle in the early 1800's, by the 2nd Earl of Longford.

It is still lived in as the family home, now probably one of the largest in Ireland to survive in private hands.

The interiors, part Georgian, part Gothic revival, have a fine collection of furniture and pictures.
Guided tours also take in the splendid Victorian kitchens and laundries, complete with all their equipment.

The gardens, like the castle are on a magnificent scale, taking in nearly 12 acres. Terraced lawns around the castle overlook superb 18th century parkland. The adjoining woodland gardens and walled gardens date largely from the early 19th century and encompass a grotto of eroded limestone from nearby Lough Derravaragh and two ornamental lakes. The present owners have added a Chinese garden, complete with pagoda and a Tibetan garden of waterfalls and streams; and a local sculptor has made fantastic woodcarvings in existing roots and trees. The walled gardens have extensive flower borders and an avenue of magnificent 200 year old Irish yews.

For children, there is also an Adventure Trail leading to the lower lake, and for those who wish to take the gardens more slowly, there is an assortment of delightful, ornamental summer houses and seats, each offering a different view.

Wedding Description

This romantic castle, home to the Pakenham family for over 350 years, is set in superb parkland in the Irish Midlands now part of Ireland’s Ancient East. With over 10 hectares of beautiful gardens, it offers a stunning range of indoor and outdoor options for hosting Civil Ceremonies. The beautiful gothic summer house in the walled flower garden is a particular favourite with our couples providing under cover seating for up to 40 persons. If you prefer, you could choose a Chinese pagoda by a lake or even an Acorn house in the the woods; Tullynally Castle Gardens offers something for all tastes. All locations are HSE approved for Civil Ceremonies.

Perfect for bespoke Weddings, we offer packages to suit all budgets and a service to make your special day memorable.

Tullynally also offers a pre booked Wedding Photography service that includes entry to the grounds for the Wedding Party and Wedding Car access to the front of the castle.

Situated on the Castle East side the Arboretum features mature 19th Century tree planting and new species introduced over the last 30 years by Tullynally owner Thomas Pakenham, the world famous tree expert.

A specially designed Acorn House in a central glade approached by sweeping forest paths is reminiscent of a sacred grove and is overlooked by Knockeyon Hill at Lough Derravaragh, home to the Children of Lir.

Described by the novelist Maria Edgeworth as a “fairytale garden” the grounds of Tullynally provide for a fairytale wedding with the castle one of the largest private residences in Ireland.

Very popular Summer time outdoor venue covered with rambling roses and surrounded with herbaceous borders looking down over the formal lawns towards the melancholic weeping fountain. Situated outside the walls of the Victorian Walled Garden and based on a train station platform this location offers great views of the flower gardens planted and cared for by Castle owner Valerie Pakenham. The area remains private for the Civil Ceremony as garden visitors are diverted.
